Responsibilities

The incumbent will assist the Deputy Director Technical Services in focusing on the areas of responsibility in accordance with the UP standard and the Clients specific needs. To achieve these goals and objectives, the incumbent will need to attend to the following:
  • To ensure compliance with statutory requirements and national building regulations
  • To strategically plan projects related to repair or replacement of building services, plant and equipment necessary for the University to achieve its mission and objectives.
  • To ensure that effective maintenance planning and execution is done according to accepted engineering standards meeting the business requirements.
  • To effectively manage the internal workshops
  • To ensure that external maintenance contracts are developed, implemented and managed according to the business requirements and to provide the best value for money option to the University of Pretoria.
  • To do project review, commissioning witnessing and hand-over (as client representative) pertaining to several building services.
  • To manage the relevant maintenance budget to ensure that the required work is done with the available funds and to record deferred maintenance.
  • To implement problem-solving skills on a continuous basis to manage and resolve crisis situations with respect to bulk infrastructure services.
  • To provide strategic support and assistance to the Deputy Director: Technical Services
Minimum Requirements
  • A four (4) year Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering
  • GCC (Electrical) or proof of registration to obtain a Government Certificate of Competence
  • Professional registration with ECSA
  • Valid Drivers license
  • Sound knowledge and experience of the following services:
    • Operations and maintenance of 11kV networks
    • Operations and maintenance LV reticulation systems
    • Operations and maintenance of Standby Generators
    • Operations and maintenance of Electrical building services
    • Operations and maintenance of Electronic building services (CCTV, Access control, Alarms and Fire detection)
    • Building management / energy management system
Required Competencies (skills, Knowledge And Behavioural Attributes)
  • Appropriate language and communication skills
  • Analytical thinking
  • Administrative skills to ensure that all records are kept in orderly fashion
  • Accounting and budget control skills
  • Computer literacy in MS Office and Excel
  • The ability to identify and solve high priority problems in a crisis situation
  • Conflict handling ability and the ability to apply problem solving techniques in both technical and organisational contexts
The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbents level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
